Teen Iron Chef

The library hosted its first Teen Iron Chef competition on Wednesday, August 3rd for teens going into grades 6 through 12 and it was a big hit! They were given the choice between working in teams or solo while having 20 minutes to create 2 dishes using the ingredients available. Of course, as with the television show, there was a secret ingredient!

There were two rounds, each round with a different secret ingredient and two dishes. Dishes were judged on creativity, presentation and originality. Check out some pictures of the event:

Book Reviews!

This has been on of our busiest summers and our weekly prize drawing during summer reading was book reviews!

Summer reading participants ages birth-18 years could drop a book review into the drawing box at the Summer Reading Registration Desk for a chance to win a prize every Friday.

Here's a few of the hundreds reviews that were entered:

The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson
Reviewed by Serena, age 13

Touching story how a street full of kids work together to help each other survive when their parents and friends are killed by a virus, sparing only children below the age of 13.

Centipede's 100 Shoes by Tony Ross
Reviewed by Matthew, age 4

I liked the book because it was silly. Centipedes don't wear shoes and socks and he had way too many to put on! Then he shared them with his friends and that was nice and silly, too.

The New Hamster by Isabel Campoy
Reviewed by Gregory, age 8

I like this book because its about hamsters and they are furry.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Reviewed by Krystal, age 12

What I liked about this book is that it was a remade story of Cinderella but has more fairy tale people in it, like the ogres, elves and giants.

We'll be posting pictures from programs this week, so keep checking the blog!

Staff Book Review

The Goddess Test
by Aimee Carter, 2011

Book Description: It's always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.

The Goddess Test is a modern retelling of a story in Greek Mythology of Persephone, daughter of Demeter, and Hades, god of the Underworld. Persephone is no longer in the picture and Hades must find another queen to rule the Underworld with him at the request of his siblings (Zeus, Poseidon,  Aphrodite, Hera, Hermes, etc.) or he will no longer be ruler of the Underworld. A series of 7 tests will find Hades a worthy queen, but over time, no one has survived. This is where the main character, Kate, comes into play. She will be the last to take the Goddess Test and there are many surprises along the way.

No spoiler alerts here, but The Goddess Test blew me away and I can't wait until the next one, Goddess Interrupted due out in January 2012. Want to find out what happens to Kate? Get your library card ready! Request it and pick it up at your local branch of the Burlington County Library System.

Interested in other Greek Mythology Fiction? Type in (or click on ->) Mythology, Greek-Fiction into the Subject Box on the online card catalog.

Keep up with the author, Aimee Carter, for new releases on her website. You can follow her on Twitter & like her on Facebook.
