Staff Book Review

Torment: a Fallen novel
by Lauren Kate, 2010

Book Description: Love Never Dies. Now that she's found him, Luce can hardly bear to be separated from Daniel, but he tells her he must go. Daniel is hunting down the immortals who want to kill Luce. Luce is hidden at Shoreline, a school with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fall angels and humans.
There, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as her windows on her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she realizes that Daniel hasn't told her everything. He's hiding something-something dangerous.
What if Daniel's version of the past isn't the truth? And what if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

If you have read the first in this series, Fallen, you've probably been waiting impatiently for Torment like I have. If you haven't read it yet, you won't be disappointed when you do! I read it in a day. Couldn't put it down. So many questions from the first book were answered and more questions replaced them that I'm assuming will be answered in the third book, Passion, due out Summer 2011. (eek! Such a long time to wait!)  My favorite part about the book is the main character, Luce. She has been reincarnated so many times, only to die when she finds and falls in love with Daniel, a fallen angel. Weird and unfortunate, I know.
But in this life, she hasn't died...

You can tell in Fallen that Luce has some grit to her and she doesn't disappoint in Torment. She stands up for herself and refuses to accept her situation. The girl has guts and this is the reason, I felt, that makes this life of Luce's different from her past lives.  I like main characters with guts. Who doesn't?

Obviously, Torment is strongly recommended by me, given that you read Fallen first. In the meantime, I know I will be anxiously counting down the days until Passion is published...

Recommended for Grades 7-12.
